Currently, the Institute of Oriental studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences is one of the leading scientific centers, which covers a wide range of research areas in the relevant field. The basis of the Institute of Oriental studies was established in November 1818 at the Asiatic Museum of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. In May 1930 by decision of the All Russia Central Executive Committee, the Asiatic Museum was merged with the College of Oriental studies, the Institute of Buddhist culture and the Turkic Cabinet within the Institute of Oriental studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences. At the suggestion of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the decree of June 1, 1950 and according to the decision of the USSR Council of Ministers Institute of Oriental studies was transferred from Leningrad to Moscow. It was decided to leave the main funds of manuscripts of the Institute and the fundamental library in Leningrad as a branch of the Institute of Oriental studies of the Academy of Sciences. The staff of the Institute - leading Russian Orientalists, experts in various fields of science relating to the study of the East - made a huge contribution to the development of theoretical problems of Russian Oriental studies and consolidated its authority in the world of science in the form of fundamental scientific works, many of which are translated into European and Oriental languages.
